"Problem fitting my new radio"

Hi Folks,
I have a small problem that has a couple of remedies but I dont know which way to go. I am hoping someone might have the answer. Here is my problem

The radio is set too far forward. The casing that holds it in place is set correctly, its just the radio is too far forward. The removable facia 'band' button is being pushed in when I use first gear. The 2nd - 3rd and 4th gears are fine. Just the first. If I am very careful I can get it into 1st gear without ruining that 'band' button. But I can see that sometime I will forget and break my radio. So my question is this........ Do I take out the gearstick and shorten it so that the 'bend' is below that button.......Do I take out the gearstick and heat bend it, lets say another 10 degrees........Do I enlarge the radio slot so that the radio is pushed in further...........or better still remove the lip of the aluminium radio cover so that the whole unit slips into the slot further, then clamp the radio somehow..........Buy another radio lol.

I would appreciate some guidance on this. Oh yes before i forget....The reason the gearstick is so far forward is because I put an overdrive unit onto a non-overdrive box. It all works perfectly well except that the total length of overdrive-gearbox-engine is shorter than normal. Thanks folks.

Pretty common problem. My gearshift lever hits the fast forward button on the tape player that is in Huxley (the Red Mk1) when I hit 3rd gear.

THe remedy in your case is to lose the plastic piece that goes behind the bezel so that the radio is closer to the panel into which it is mounted.

Good luck!

Joe

P.S. The other solution is to install a different transmission. THe 6 speed that is in Tiny Tim has the lever so far back that it does not need to be bent to facilitate comfortable shifting.

Thanks Joe, I will have a look to see if that plastic piece can be removed. Somehow I dont think so because this radio has a removable fascia, but you never know. And I dont think another transmission is on the cards right now. So I will rule that one out.

Redo the radio mount and slip it back further.

Thanks Foxtrapper, I was able to remove the plastic bezel as Joe advised but it made the radio look half finished. Anyway I have it sorted.........What I did was to remove the two bolts either side of the legs, pushing the legs towards the bulkhead, and fastening it down using just one bolt either side. I still have the rigidity and the radio is not touching the gearstick. All that just to save 5mm. At least I wont break my radio when I use 1st gear now. Thanks for the help folks.
