"synchro transmission upgrade"
I have a 1969 spit mk3 with overdrive and want to convert the trans to one that will synchro into first gear. Can I just swap out one from a later year or is it more complicated than that?

I don't know the details for the overdrive transmission. but I'd assume if u can find a syncro 3-rail it would bolt in...but if I may not be correct...the output shaft the syncro 3-rail might be a bit larger than the non-syncro

So as I see it, you want to change your MKIII, 3 syncro transmission (plus O/D), to a later 4 syncro tranny AND retain the O/D from your old 3 syncro??
If you get a pre 75 (3 rail) transmission you should be able to switch over the O/D BUT as Aaron says, check that the main shaft is compatible!! Fitting the transmission should not be a problem providing the clutch and flywheel are changed at the same time. I drive shaft from a post 75 NON O/D car will replace the old drive shaft.
