"TR6 Short on power"

   Hi Folks:

Got my '76 TR6 3 weeks ago & have replaced the plugs & coil wire. Parts take a while to arrive out here on the far East coast. Points were just okay & the new wires with all the rest of the usual ignition bits will be here soon. Car does not miss & pulls okay uphill, etc but just feels underpowered. Backfires occasionally. The timing was off 28 deg & we reset to 4 deg BTDC & it would run but not drive - sputter, sputter. Reset to about 9 deg & it runs & drives again almost same as before - not good, but driveable for a weekend spin. This seems like carb trouble but can't be sure till all ignition bits are in and I could be premature in thinking carbs before ignition. Nobody around here knows anything much about Brit cars unless they read my shop manual - I can do that myself. The air valves are free floating but don't appear to be quite in sync. Thinking of buying a rebuild kit & wonder if a Grose-jet needle and seat is a better way to go with the rest of the kit. Will have access to a Unisyn and needle valve adjusting tool this weekend. Should I mess with this if the ignition parts don't arrive or just leave it? The car has pretty good compression - down about 20 PSI in 2 cyl - what the hel*; it's 28 yrs old right. Any advice would be appraciated. I had SU's on my old '67 TR4A & never had a moments trouble so this is new to me. Thanks.

How Did the old plugs look? What colour?
When you use the ignition timing light and rev the engine does the ignition advance?. does it advance smoothly?.

   Tony:

Thanks for responding. The plugs were basic black; not too dirty but nowhere near light colored. My buddy was on the timing light so I can't say whether it advanced or advanced smoothly - didn't think to ask. Will check with him. TR6 conked last nite & had to tow it home & so far cannot restart. Still waiting on ignition bits but will install the new points I have & see what happens. I have spark and fuel but only have 2.5 lbs pressure on fuel line according to vacuum tester. Also suspect dirty gauze in fuel pump & will pull the pump if it won't start with the new points. Have the Unisyn but will wait on ignition bits before fooling with that. Ain't sports cars fun!!
